The Maiden Voyage

Saturday, July 5 was the day of the official maiden voyage on our boat. Our friends, Greg and Annette Russon, came with us as we hauled the boat to Lincoln Beach to launch the boat. After waiting in line for at least half an hour, we backed the boat into the water. However, to be on the safe side, since the boat and engine were made in the 1960's, we kept it on the trailer until we jad it successfully started. It was a success! After several attempts, Kyle was able to fiddle with a few parts, one of which is called a choke (I know, my mastery, or lack, of such technical boat terms should not be a surprise to any . . . ). He was able to get the motor to start and stay started long enough for us to pick up Greg, who had parked the Durango and trailer. Once we had everyone, we headed out of the dike. We put on the engine cover, with the intention of keeping it on only until we got out further on the lake, but alas, it was not to be. After picking up speed for a minute or so, we heard a horrible grinding/engine roaring/sputtering/dying sound. Since the sound had come from the motor, we took off the engine cover and discovered to our dismay that somehow, the engine cover had gotten pushed up against the belt and the belt had snapped. Annette flagged down an incoming boat who agreed to tow us back to the dock. We decided that although short, the maiden voyage was still a success, since we now that the engine works, and once we replace the timing belt, we should be all set. We took the boat out of the water, but stayed on the beach and enjoyed sandwiches and sugar wafers. Kyle and Greg fished for a bit while Annette and I relaxed in camping chairs. Overall, it was an enjoyable way to spend our afternoon.
